Kindle Fire HD (8.9 inch) Review

kindle-fire-hdThe new Kindle Fire HD is an 8.9 inches tablet by Amazon. It is about two inches bigger than the older version.

The design of the new Kindle Fire HD is almost the same as the old one. It seems that the only thing that has changed is the size. It measures at 9.45 x 6.5 inches and it is 0.35 thin. This makes it a bit thinner than the older version but it is a bit heavier now, at 20 ounces. It has a dark black soft touch finish with a somewhat glossy band that runs across its length. On this band you will see the kindle branding.

Around the rim of Kindle Fire HD are all the physical outputs and inputs.  On the right edge of Kindle Fire HD, you will find the volume rocker, the 3.5mm headphones jack and the power button. The power button and the volume rocker are flush into the body and are a bit hard to find with your fingers without looking. At the bottom center of Kindle Fire HD, you will find the HDMI port and the micro USB port. The micro SIM card tray can be found on the upper edge.

The Kindle Fire HD has an 8.9 inches IPS LCD with 1920 x 1200 resolutions. Contrast and brightness of Kindle Fire HD are good and it has perfect viewing angles. The speakers on the new Kindle Fire HD are not as good as they were on the older version. Even with full volume the sound output is low but the sound quality is still as good as it was before.

The new Kindle Fire HD is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual core TI OMAP 4470 processor. Webpage rendering is fast and pinch to zoom is more responsive than before but when you scroll though the webpage you will notice some lag. Amazon says that the new Kindle Fire HD’s battery will run for 10 hours, which is about one hour less than the older version.

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 inches version runs on Ice Cream Sandwich and uses the same user interface as the older version. All the apps, music, movie, website and anything else can be found on the main page, in the ‘last in fire out’ order, meaning anything you play or read moves to the top of the list.

Amazon’s partnership makes sure that anything that is available for digital download is on your fingertips, either its music, books, movies or anything else. Amazon has also added a few new tweaks to the OS of Kindle Fire HD. Like the X-Ray feature for books, which allows you to get glossary and Wikipedia definitions or meaning to the complicated terms.  The X-Ray feature for movies will open up IMDB info and show you which actors are in the current scene. The Free Time function enables the parents to control the usage of their kids.

To sum it all up, the new Kindle Fire HD 8.9 inches version offers better performance and a larger screen compared to the older version. Apart from that, both the versions of Kindle Fire HD are almost the same.
